New Link Checker to Avoid Fraud

FraudSMART has introduced Scamchecker.ie, a tool to help shoppers verify websites and link legitimacy before making purchases. By checking links against a real-time database of known scam sites and malware hosts, it provides vital information to support safer online shopping.

Niamh Davenport of BPFI emphasized its role alongside other security measures to help consumers avoid scams during the holiday season. The launch is supported by a national awareness campaign across radio, digital, and social media. Davenport urged shoppers to pause and take simple steps to protect their money and information online.

One in five regular online shoppers reported losing money to scams in the past year, with some losses reaching hundreds of euros, according to FraudSMART, a fraud awareness initiative by Banking Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI). To combat this, FraudSMART has launched Scamchecker.ie, a tool designed to help shoppers verify website and link legitimacy during the peak Christmas shopping season.

Eight out of ten consumers plan to shop online ahead of Christmas, according to BPFI. Niamh Davenport, Head of Financial Crime, warns of increased fraud risk during this period, as scammers exploit Cyber Monday and the holiday rush. Fake websites, often posing as popular brands offering “discount deals,” trick shoppers through links in emails, social media, and ads, leaving victims without their purchases and out of pocket.

Research from BPFI reveals that one in five shoppers neglect basic online security, such as checking for secure website connections (e.g., “https” and a padlock icon) or avoiding public Wi-Fi for payments. Nearly half admit to clicking on links from social media or pop-up ads instead of verifying websites independently. With over 10% of scam victims losing more than €500, Niamh Davenport urges extra caution as Cyber Monday deals and Christmas shopping ramp up.
